What "maintenance" actually means
It is not a retainer for doing nothing. Here is the work that happens in a normal month.
Software that is left alone does not stay the same. The world around it changes, and it slowly stops fitting.
The work nobody sees
- Updates. The platform, the libraries and the server all release security fixes. Someone has to apply them and check nothing broke.
- Backups. Taking them is easy. Restoring one to prove it works is the part that gets skipped.
- Monitoring. A check every minute, and a person who is told when it fails.
- Certificates and domains. They expire on a date. Somebody should know that date.
The work you do see
A new field on a form. A report in a different order. A user who needs different access. Small changes that take an hour or two and make the system keep fitting the business.
What you get at the end of the month
A short note: what was updated, what was fixed, what changed, and anything we think you should decide soon.
